Tommy Tuberville ended his monthslong hold on nearly all military promotions, saying he would allow hundreds of officers to move forward, while still demanding individual votes for about a dozen four-star generals and admirals. “I’m not going to hold the promotions of these people any longer. We just released them, everybody,” Tuberville told reporters Tuesday. “I think about 440 of them, everybody but 10 or 11, four stars.”

Support for removing Santos from office has grown in recent weeks, and colleagues set in motion two fresh attempts on Tuesday, even as the Republican Party leadership hasn’t endorsed the effort. In a speech on the House floor, Santos said that it would be improper for lawmakers to vote to expel him before the legal process fully plays out, arguing that removing him from office would set a dangerous precedent.

Nikhil Gupta, a 52-year-old Indian national, is charged in federal court in Manhattan with two criminal counts related to the ultimately foiled murder plot, a newly unsealed court filing shows. The Indian government official who allegedly directed the murder plot has called himself a "Senior Field Officer" with responsibilities in "Security Management" and "Intelligence," according to the DOJ. Gupta allegedly then helped broker a deal for the Indian government official to pay the purported hitman $100,000 for the assassination. The government official fed personal information about the victim to Gupta and asked for regular updates about the progress of the murder plot.
